What will you do as a Safety & Sustainability Lead at Vopak?

The Safety & Sustainability Lead is responsible for providing leadership and subject matter expertise in driving the company’s efforts around safe, compliant, and sustainable operations. You will be leading the safety & sustainability improvement programs within the Business Unit Netherlands. The role embodies skills, judgment and knowledge to provide specialist support & governance to the different sites and relevant stakeholders. You will be leading the implementation and further development of Vopak’s Operational and Contractor Safety Management and Sustainability Roadmap.

What do we expect from you as a Safety & Sustainability Lead?

  • Passion for safety and sustainability and the ability to motivate & mobilize others

  • Educated at HBO/Academic level, preferably technical, safety or environmental science;

  • At least 5-10 years of experience in safety/sustainability/operations and/or in the oil or chemicals industry;

  • Excellent knowledge of English and Dutch (Dutch proficiency is mandatory);

  • Knowledge of relevant SHE rules and regulations;

  • Good communicative (written, verbal) and social skills;

  • Travel between different sites across the Netherlands

  • Competences: results orientation, quality orientation, problem analysis and judgment, persuasiveness and negotiation, sensitivity, discipline, persistence & resilience, ownership.

  • Eligibility to work in the Netherlands

What does your day look like?

You will be working with the safety and sustainability experts across the different sites in the Netherlands to develop and drive improvement programs, to mobilize colleagues and to provide knowledge and expertise to help them improve their safety & sustainability performance. This will also involve internal and external stakeholders such as other functional departments, contractors, authorities, customers and other relevant parties.

What are the core responsibilities?

  • Develop and lead improvement programs across the different sites to improve operational and contractor safety performance

  • Develop the sustainability roadmap for the BU NL aligned with the global sustainability roadmap

  • Provide advice and support on safety and sustainability topics to site management and coach managers and employees on how to achieve standards expected. 

  • Develop dashboarding and monitor and analyze safety and sustainability data to identify improvement opportunities and monitor progress towards the set objectives

  • Lead and monitor the Greenhouse Gas and VOC reduction program and support the sites with the development and implementation of roadmaps and projects

  • Develop and implement sustainability programs around topics such as air quality, biodiversity and community engagement

  • Coordinate, participate and lead SHEQ related audits, support terminals in the preparation for internal and external audits and participate in commissioning and pre safety start up reviews.

  • Lead Incident Investigations and ensure the quality and timely follow up of incident investigations.  Act as Tripodian for severe incident investigations.

  • Acts as the Business Unit Subject Matter Expert of the Control of Work (COW) process and functional leader of the Permit to Work system. Monitor COW process compliance and adherence to corporate and local programs and procedures.

  • Maintain overview of recordable incidents and proactively track incident investigation progress and corrective action implementation. Facilitate incident learning and sharing. 

  • Assist in de design and execution of employee and contractor SHEQ training programs

  • Provide regulatory interpretation and technical advice.
