Your Main Mission

You will build together with all the colleagues on our ambition to be the best in Port. Vopak SA is a growing company and major investments have been done. You will join our motivated team to optimize the use of the infrastructure and contribute to a culture of being proud to work for this growing company.  You will play a lead role in driving a full proactive safety culture in line with our local and global ambitions.

Purpose of Position

Lead and advise Vopak South Africa concerning Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality matters. Investigate incidents taking into account corporate guidelines and standards, South African local law, and the requirements of customers in order to minimize health and safety risks and contribute to the reputation of Vopak South Africa as a safe and high-quality organization for all stakeholders.

Tasks & Responsibilities

SHEQ Policy & Procedures

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Vopak SA SHEQ policy, ensuring alignment with the global SHEQ policy and conform to relevant certification standards in order to direct the SHEQ activities.

  • Implement and contribute to the development of effective Risk Assessment Management strategies.

  • Ensure the training of all OpCo staff in relation to SHEQ policies, practices, and procedures.

  • Initiate areas for improvement for SHEQ policies or procedures and lead implementation for remedial action.

SHEQ Advice

  • Advise OpCo Management Team on SHEQ matters, in line with the Vopak SA SHEQ policy, and in accordance with South African local law and regulation, in order to enable the OpCo to take appropriate measures.

SHEQ System and reporting

  • Oversee the maintenance & updating of the OpCo SHEQ System and the reporting system in reference to SHEQ KPI's.

  • Propose cutting-edge solutions post reviewing accident statistics, trends, and recommend remedial solutions.

People & Team

  • Develop and coach SHEQ team members

  • Coach the SA organization and provide guidance and leadership as part of the Management Team to further mature the Safety Culture to fully move to a proactive Safety Culture.

Functional Know-how, Expertise, and best practices

  • Build and maintain professional know-how & make this knowledge and expertise available to managers and other professionals in the Vopak network

  • Translate this know-how to the specific Vopak situations, in line with Vopak's business needs to ensure best practice contribution to the business performance and compliance with legal SHEQ requirements.


  • Implement a system of regular SHEQ audits, in line with defined Vopak SA SHEQ policy and relevant rules and guidelines in order to review compliance and advise on improvement.

  • Conduct periodic SHEQ audits within the OpCo and discuss the outcomes of audits in the Vopak SHEQ SA team and the SHEQ Divisional Team.

Troubleshooting / Incident contingency

  • Pro-actively signalize and handle SHEQ problems within the Vopak SA network

  • Give instructions about solutions and make sure these solutions are being executed by the terminal in order to optimize the SHEQ performance.

Internal & External Stakeholder Management

  • Develop and maintain relationships with all relevant local public bodies and stakeholders, and share information in order to obtain knowledge on new regulations and to contribute to a positive reputation of Vopak South Africa.

  • Lead, influence, and drive a World-class Safety culture throughout the Vopak SA Network

Qualifications & Experience

  • Applicable 4 year degree with a min. of 10 years of work experience in a similar role, petrochemical industry experience is required

  •  Incident Investigation training

  •  Applied Safety, Health, Environmental Policies & Principles / Nebosh general certificate

  •  ISO Management system training

  •  Hazardous Chemical Handling Training.

  • Proven experience and knowledge about Safety Leadership and Culture Development programs

  • Strong understanding and specialist knowledge of SHEQ related legislation, international standards such as the International maritime dangerous goods code, globally harmonized system, etc. as well as the ISO standards applicable to SHEQ

  • Knowledge of SHEQ permit requirements in relation to our industry, and experience in implementing such

  • Understanding Site Operations

  • Understanding the properties of chemicals and M.S.D.S.

  • Knowledge of Health and Environmental requirements
